Kaya and Chemeen Curry in Coconut Milk (Plantain and Dry Shrimp Curry in Coconut Milk)



Yield: - 3-4 servings

Ingredients: 

1. Raw plantain -1, cut into small pieces
2. Dry shrimp (Unakka Chemmeen ) - 1/4 cup
3. Coconut shredded - 1 cup 
4. Pearl onion - 3 (whole) + 4 (finely chopped)
5. Turmeric powder - 1/2 +1/4 tsp 
6. Red chilli powder - 1/2 + 1/4 tsp
7. Salt - As desired 
8. Oil (Preferrably coconut oil) - 2-3 tbsp
9. Curry leaves - 1 sprig

Preparation: 

1. Heat 1 tbsp of oil in a wok. Add the dry shrimp and saute it for 2 minutes. 
2. Crush it using the back of a spoon or using a mortar and pestle and keep aside. 
3. Puree the shredded coconut with 3 pearl onions and a little water and keep aside. 
4. In a saucepan, boil the raw plantains with 2 cups of water, salt, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder and 1/2 tsp red chilli powder until the plantains are cooked but not mushy. 
5. Add the dry shrimp and coconut paste and cook until it boils. Remove from heat. 
6. Heat 2 tbsp oil in a small pan, add the chopped pearl onions and fry them until golden brown. 
7. When golden brown, add 1/4 tsp red chilli powder and turmeric powder and curry leaves, fry for one more minute and pour over the shrimp and plantain curry.
8. Give the curry a mix and serve with warm rice.
